Types of Apple Laptops

The MacBook Air is an ultralight laptop computer.
Apple designs and manufactures several laptops under its MacBook product line. Apple's MacBook computers vary in size, hardware and pricing, but they all run the Mac OS X operating system and feature similar styling and design. Prior to the MacBook line, Apple manufactured PowerPC-powered laptops under the names iBook and PowerBook.

MacBook

  • The MacBook is Apple's entry-level laptop computer. As of the time of publication, the latest model features a 2.4 gigahertz dual-core processor provided by Intel along with two gigabytes of RAM, which is upgradeable to four gigabytes. MacBook computers can be customized during purchase to include larger hard drives or different optical disc drives, but they all include a 13.3 inch LCD display. An internal camera, microphone and stereo speakers makes the MacBook a capable communication or multimedia computer. As of the time of publication, a basic MacBook retails for $999.

MacBook Pro

  •   The MacBook Pro is Apple's more advanced laptop model. It offers improved performance and larger displays than the basic MacBook. The MacBook Pro is available with a 13.3-inch display, a 15.4-inch display or a 17-inch display. Like the basic MacBook, the MacBook Pro has several customizable options, including hard drive, optical disc drive and processor speed. Most MacBook Pro computers are powered by Intel's Core i7 processors with speeds between 2.0 GHz and 2.7 Ghz. 13-inch models are available with a dual-core processor while the 15-inch and 17-inch models include a quad-core processor. The computers include 4 GB of RAM, which can be upgraded to 8 GB. At the time of publication, MacBook Pro computers range in price from $1199 for a basic 13.3-inch model to over $2499 for a 17-inch model.
  • The MacBook Air is a super-portable alternative to the basic MacBook computer. At 2.9 pounds, the 13-inch MacBook Air is 1.8 pounds lighter than the basic MacBook and 1.6 pounds lighter than the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air is also available in a smaller model with an 11-inch display. The MacBook Air's 1.4 or 1.86 Intel Core Duo processor makes it slower than the MacBook or the MacBook Pro. It is available with either 2 GB or 4 GB of RAM, but the RAM is not upgradeable. Like the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air includes an internal microphone, speakers and a camera for communication. At the time of publication, the MacBook Air costs between $999 for an 11-inch model with a 64 GB hard drive and over $1,559 for a 13-inch model with a 256 GB hard drive.

Older Models

  • Apple adopted the MacBook brand name when it began using Intel processors in its laptops in 2006. Prior to that, they built their computers with PowerPC processors. Apple manufactured two different PowerPC-based laptop brands: the PowerBook and the iBook. Each PowerBook was slightly more powerful than the iBook computers released around the same time. PowerBook computers were available with 12-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch displays. iBook computers were available with 12-inch and 14-inch displays. Like other Apple laptops, iBook and PowerBook computers could be customized by the buyer to include different hardware components.
